FAQ

What is Blue Hills Regional Technical School?

Opened in 1966, Blue Hills Regional offers students from its nine district towns (Avon, Braintree, Canton, Holbrook, Norwood, Randolph, and Westwood were the original towns in the District; Dedham and Milton joined in 1987) superb academic and career/technical training. When our students graduate, they are ready to enter the workforce, attend an institution of higher learning, or join the military.

What kinds of educational programs do you offer?

The academic departments have created a curriculum that is balanced, sequential, and planned to meet the needs and goals of a diverse student population. Those students who plan to enter college will find a challenging curriculum available that will prepare them for admission to most competitive universities. Other course requirements ensure that students take a thorough program that allows them to develop a solid background in their chosen vocational/technical field.  All students at Blue Hills use half of their time for learning in a specific technical program. In addition to the hands-on education that takes place in the technical area or laboratory, all programs include technology and related courses taught in a classroom that provide theoretical information and background necessary for a better understanding of the operations and functions of the technical program. Blue Hills has sixteen outstanding technical programs for students to choose from.

What is the value of a vocational/technical education?

Vocational schools like Blue Hills actually offer students two educations in one. They receive a wide-ranging background in key academic areas, as well as career and technical training that readies them for the rigors and challenges they will face on the job. Our goal is to equip each student to reach his or her greatest potential and become successful in a profession and as a member of society.

What happens to Blue Hills students after they graduate?

Our students are frequently accepted to dozens of excellent colleges and universities such as the Culinary Institute of America, Suffolk University, Bentley University, the University of Massachusetts, Wheelock College, Johnson and Wales University, and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. Others opt for jobs which allow them to put their vocational education to practical use right away.

What is Ninth-Grade Exploratory?

The Exploratory program enables students to gain exposure to a variety of technical programs and career choices. While exploring the different technical programs, students obtain valuable career information about the industry represented in the program being explored. Students will complete several projects that give them a sense of what is required should they select the program as a career choice.

How do you ensure that your vocational programs comply with current industry trends?

We are dedicated to offering students state-of-the-art training on the most up-to-date equipment. Each of our vocational programs has an advisory board comprised of professionals in that field. We regularly confer with them to be certain that Blue Hills’ programs and technical curriculum are in line with industry practices and trends.
